The Snohomish County Council has elected Terry Ryan to serve as chair of the council for 2016.

Ryan is in his third year of his first term with the council, where he represents District 4, which includes Bothell, Brier, Mill Creek and Mountlake Terrace.

"I am really honored to be elected council chair," Ryan said. "I am looking forward to working with the council and Executive Somers for the betterment of Snohomish County."

Ryan previously served on the Mill Creek City Council for seven years, including four terms as mayor.

He is a real estate broker at Kidder Mathews and is a high school soccer coach. He lives in Mill Creek.

The council also elected Brian Sullivan to serve as vice-chair. Sullivan will fulfill the chair's duties if for any reason Ryan is absent or unable.

Sullivan is in his third term with the council and represents District 2, which includes Everett, Mukilteo and Tulalip. He served as chair in 2012.

He previously served on the Mukilteo City Council for four years, as mayor for eight years and as a state representative for seven years.

Sullivan is the owner and manager of Sully's restaurant in Mukilteo. He lives in Mukilteo.

"I am excited for 2016, and to serve as vice-chair once more," Sullivan said. "This is a great opportunity to work together with Chair Ryan to move the county forward."

The council holds a vote at the first meeting of every year to elect a chair and vice-chair.
